Importing furniture from India to France

France layers three things onto the usual import: EUDR timber due diligence, the AGEC anti-waste labelling regime with its Triman and Info-Tri marks, and furniture eco-participation. Two of those are decided by what is printed and packed at the factory — which is where an inspection can still catch them.

The France-specific layer

The Triman label is the thing other markets don't have

France's AGEC anti-waste law requires most consumer products and packaging placed on the French market to carry the Triman logo alongside Info-Tri sorting instructions telling the consumer how to dispose of each part. Furniture is explicitly within an EPR stream, so the mark can be required on the product, its packaging or the accompanying documentation.

FRANCE — AGEC LABELLING & EPR OBLIGATIONS
TRIMANThe Triman logo. A single, strictly-formatted pictogram — a figure between recycling arrows — that cannot be stretched, recoloured or restyled. Black on light or white on dark, with a minimum size that varies slightly by product family. It signals the item is subject to a French sorting instruction.
INFO-TRIInfo-Tri sorting instructions. Triman is not enough on its own. Since 2022 it must appear with Info-Tri signage showing how each component is sorted. The two elements are inseparable, and the wording is category-specific for furniture. Two changes to plan for: the European Commission referred France to the Court of Justice in July 2025 over the mandatory physical logo, so the obligation stands but is under challenge; and harmonised EU packaging marking under PPWR becomes mandatory on 12 August 2028.
EPRFurniture eco-participation. Furniture placed on the French market sits under extended producer responsibility, administered through an approved eco-organisation. Registration and the eco-contribution are commercial obligations that sit with you — an inspector does not handle them, but the labelling that flows from them is checkable at origin.
FRENCHFrench-language consumer information. Under the Toubon law, information provided to French consumers — instructions, assembly guidance, safety and warranty information — must be available in French. English-only inserts printed at the factory are a recurring, avoidable failure.
DGCCRFWho enforces it. The DGCCRF supervises AGEC labelling and may impose fines per non-compliant product, with a stated maximum in the region of €15,000 for a legal entity depending on the situation. Enforcement is on the French market, not usually at the border — which is precisely why importers are caught after stock has landed.
WHERE THIS BREAKS — AND WHY WE CAN CATCH IT

The eco-participation registration is yours to arrange; we cannot do it for you and would not pretend to. But the physical consequence — the Triman and Info-Tri marks correctly printed, the French-language insert actually in the carton — is applied during production. We verify the marks are present, correctly formed and legible, and that the French documentation is in the box, before the container is sealed. A missing insert caught in Jodhpur is a reprint; caught in Lyon it is a re-work of the whole consignment.

Timber due diligence

EUDR applies, and the liability is yours

As an EU member state France is fully within the EU Deforestation Regulation. Wooden furniture is in scope, and the operator — the party first placing goods on the EU market — carries the legal responsibility. For furniture built in India and sold in France, that is you.

WHAT EUDR NEEDS FROM AN INDIAN SUPPLY CHAIN

Plot geolocation for the timber, proof of legal production, and a documented chain back through the yards and traders — then a due diligence statement you file. Large and medium operators are in scope from 30 December 2026 — and so are micro and small furniture importers, because the general deferral to 30 June 2027 excludes products already covered by the EU Timber Regulation, wooden furniture among them. The deforestation cut-off date of 31 December 2020 does not move. The evidence has to be collected in India, which is what our EUDR supplier evidence work is built to do.

NO EUDR CERTIFICATE EXISTS

There is no EUDR certification scheme and no inspection company can certify a supplier as compliant. What exists is evidence, a risk assessment and a statement you file. We collect and verify the evidence; the statement stays yours. Treat any vendor offering an EUDR certificate with caution.

Not legal advice. An orientation summary for French furniture importers, not a compliance opinion. AGEC signage rules, EPR obligations and EUDR have all been amended over time and differ by product category and company size. Confirm your position with qualified counsel, your eco-organisation and current DGCCRF guidance against the official texts. Checked against official sources on 7 September 2026.
The physical risk

Two climates in one country

Northern and continental France heat hard through winter and dry hardwood out; the Mediterranean south is milder and damper. The failure mode depends on where the furniture actually lives, so a single national moisture figure produces claims somewhere.

Where French orders go wrong

Four failures on the India–France route

RISK 01 · LABELLING

Missing Triman and Info-Tri marks

The France-specific failure. Marks absent, mis-formed, or printed too small, and a French-language insert missing from the carton — all applied at the factory, all avoidable at inspection, all expensive to fix after landing.

RISK 02 · TIMBER

Wet wood into heated interiors

Sheesham shipped above 10% cracks in a centrally heated Paris apartment, weeks after delivery, as a consumer complaint rather than a shipping dispute.

RISK 03 · EUDR EVIDENCE

Timber nobody can trace

A due diligence statement needs species, origin and a documented chain. Timber bought through Indian yards frequently arrives with a purchase invoice and a common name — not the same thing.

RISK 04 · FINISH

Retail-grade finish expectations

French retail and DTC buyers reject on surface appearance readily. Lacquer cured in monsoon humidity clouds inside a hot container and arrives blemished.

Questions

French importers ask

Can you handle our Triman and EPR registration?

No — registration with your eco-organisation and the eco-participation contribution are commercial obligations that sit with you, and anyone claiming to do them as part of an inspection is blurring two different jobs. What we do is verify the physical result at the factory: that the Triman logo and Info-Tri instructions are correctly printed and legible, and that the required French-language documentation is actually in the carton. That is where the avoidable failures happen.

Does the furniture itself need the Triman label, or just the packaging?

It depends on the product and how it is sold, which is why the placement should be confirmed with your eco-organisation before production. Triman most universally applies to packaging, but furniture sits in an EPR stream where the mark can also be required on the product or its accompanying documentation. We check whatever your specification calls for is present and correctly formed.

What moisture content should we specify for France?

8–10% as a general figure, adjusted by region. Continental and northern France with hard winter heating warrant the drier end, while the Mediterranean south is gentler. Tell us where the stock is destined and we set it accordingly rather than averaging.

We import via Antwerp or Rotterdam, not a French port. Does EUDR change?

The operator is whoever first places the goods on the EU market. If your goods clear in the Netherlands or Belgium and you are the importer of record there, the operator obligation attaches at that point — see our Netherlands guide. If a French entity is the first to place them on the market, it attaches in France. Either way the timber evidence needed is the same, and it is collected in India.

How fast can you get to a factory?

Same day in Jodhpur and Jaipur, 24 hours in Delhi NCR, 48–72 hours in Saharanpur, Moradabad and Kolkata. Bookings confirmed within two hours with a fixed quote. France is three and a half to four and a half hours behind us, so a morning request is usually answered the same working day.

Are you connected to any Indian factory or agent?

No. Qualis is buyer-paid and takes zero commission from factories. Supplier shortlisting is a fixed fee paid by you and firewalled from inspection work. An inspector paid by the party being inspected has no reason to fail anything.

Our role — stated plainly

Marks are printed in Jodhpur, filed in France

The Triman and Info-Tri marks and the French-language inserts are produced at the factory. Whether your EPR registration is in order is a French-side obligation we cannot discharge for you.

What we do

  • Verify the Triman and Info-Tri marks are physically printed and legible on the goods or packaging as specified.
  • Check French-language inserts and assembly instructions are present in the carton.
  • Confirm the artwork in production matches the artwork you approved.
  • Photograph every mark against the batch it covers.

What we don't do

  • Register you with an eco-organisme (Ecomaison, Valdelia or Valobat) or obtain your identifiant unique. That is your obligation as the party placing goods on the French market — and since 10 July 2026 a producer not established in France must appoint a French-established mandataire.
  • Approve the legal sufficiency of your French text or your sorting wording.
  • File any EPR declaration on your behalf.
  • Give legal advice on the AGEC law.
