Importing furniture from India to the UAE and GCC
Mundra to Jebel Ali is under a week — the shortest sailing of any market we serve, and the least forgiving. There is no six-week window in which to discover a problem and arrange a solution. Whatever is wrong when the doors close is wrong when the container lands.

Jebel Ali is a hub, and hubs concentrate risk
A large share of Indian furniture entering the region clears in the UAE and moves onward into Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain. That makes UAE distributors responsible for goods that have to satisfy several regimes at once — and Saudi Arabia is the strictest of them.
Saudi clears regulated goods — wood furniture, upholstery and lighting — only against certificates registered in SABER before arrival; a certificate obtained after arrival counts as non-compliance and the shipment re-exports at your expense. If Saudi is your onward market, the full SABER, SASO and Arabic-labelling detail is in our Saudi Arabia guide.
There is no EUDR, Lacey Act or UK-style timber due diligence regime in the GCC. If you sell only within the Gulf, the deforestation paperwork that consumes European and American importers is not your problem. It becomes your problem the moment you also supply an EU or UK customer — and if that is on your roadmap, build the timber evidence now rather than retrofitting it later.
We are not a conformity assessment body
This matters more in the GCC than anywhere else on our list, because the region runs on certificates and plenty of vendors blur the line between issuing one and checking one.
What we do
- ✓Verify that the goods in your container match the specification the certificates describe.
- ✓Trace test reports and material certificates to the actual batch in production.
- ✓Check labelling, markings and documentation consistency before the container is sealed.
- ✓Catch component substitution — the reason a genuine certificate stops describing your goods.
- ✓Inspect quality, moisture, construction and packing to your spec.
What we don't do
- —Issue ECAS, G-Mark, PCoC or SCoC certificates. Only bodies authorised by MoIAT, GSO or SASO can do that — you need an approved conformity assessment body alongside us.
- —Register your products in SABER. That sits with you as the Gulf-side importer.
- —Perform accredited laboratory testing. We verify reports; labs produce them.
- —Give legal or customs advice. We document facts; your broker and counsel interpret them.
Furniture lives between 45°C and an air conditioner
Gulf furniture experiences a swing nothing else on our list does. Coastal humidity and extreme heat outside, aggressively conditioned dry air inside, and often a spell in an unconditioned warehouse in between. Wood moves through all three.
| Stage | What happens | Typical MC |
|---|---|---|
| Indian workshop, unmanaged | Kiln cycles cut short when orders run late. | 12–16% |
| Container, under a week at sea | Short leg, but extreme deck temperatures. Adhesives and finishes are stressed more than on longer, cooler routes. | — |
| Unconditioned warehousing | Free-zone storage can run very hot. Veneer lifting, edge banding failure and finish softening start here. | HEAT RISK |
| Conditioned interior, year-round | Air conditioning holds interiors dry for twelve months, not four. Shrinkage is continuous rather than seasonal. | 6–9% |
| Our shipping specification | Dry enough for permanent air conditioning, with adhesive and veneer checks weighted accordingly. | 8–10% |
European furniture gets a dry season and a recovery season. Gulf furniture does not — conditioned air keeps it dry all year, so shrinkage never reverses. Wood that would survive a German winter and re-equilibrate by June simply keeps moving here. It is also the reason adhesive and veneer quality matter more in this market than joint strength alone.
If you are supplying an FF&E fit-out
Hotel, restaurant and residential tower fit-outs run to fixed handover dates with penalties attached. On a five-day sailing, a rejected consignment cannot be remade and reshipped inside the schedule — which makes origin inspection the only real protection.
No recovery time
A defect found at Jebel Ali leaves you choosing between accepting substandard goods and missing handover. Found in Jodhpur at 50% production, it is a rework instruction.
Two hundred chairs, three workshops
Volume orders get subcontracted. Finish and dimension drift between workshops is invisible in photographs and glaring across a hotel restaurant floor.
Contract upholstery requirements
Furnishings in public and commercial premises carry fire performance expectations under UAE fire and life safety requirements. Confirm the applicable specification with your consultant and Civil Defence approvals route before production, not at delivery.
Two calendars, one deadline
Indian production stops for Diwali and regional festivals; Gulf approvals slow through Ramadan and Eid. Both are predictable and both get left out of schedules.

Protect my containerGCC importers ask
Can you issue our SASO or ECAS certificate?
No, and be careful with anyone who says they can while also selling you inspection. Only bodies authorised by SASO, GSO or MoIAT may issue PCoC, SCoC, G-Mark or ECAS certificates. We work alongside your conformity assessment body: they certify the product, we verify that what is actually in your container matches what was certified. Those are different jobs and it is healthier that different firms do them.
We re-export into Saudi Arabia. What is the real risk?
Arriving without the documentation registered in SABER. Letters of undertaking are no longer accepted and a certificate obtained after arrival counts as non-compliance, with re-export at your expense. Wood furniture, upholstery and lighting are regulated, so the certificate work has to be finished before the goods sail. Our Saudi Arabia guide covers SABER, SASO and Arabic labelling in full.
What moisture content should we specify?
8–10% for solid hardwood. That is tighter than we recommend for the Netherlands and similar to Germany, because air conditioning keeps Gulf interiors dry year-round rather than seasonally — so shrinkage continues instead of reversing in summer. We also weight adhesive, veneer and edge-banding checks more heavily here, since heat during transit and unconditioned storage attacks those before it attacks joints.
Do EUDR or timber legality rules apply to us?
Not for goods sold within the GCC — there is no equivalent regime here. They apply the moment you supply an EU or UK customer, and retrofitting timber evidence onto an existing supplier is far harder than building it from the first order. If European supply is on your roadmap, start the evidence work now.
How fast can you get to a factory?
Same day in Jodhpur and Jaipur, 24 hours in Delhi NCR, 48–72 hours in Saharanpur, Moradabad and Kolkata. Bookings confirmed within two hours. Gulf time is only ninety minutes behind us, so we work essentially the same day as you — which matters when a loading date moves at short notice.
Are you connected to any Indian factory or agent?
No. Qualis is buyer-paid and takes zero commission from factories. Supplier shortlisting is a fixed fee paid by you and firewalled from inspection work. An inspector paid by the party being inspected has no reason to fail anything.

Everything above is decided in a factory in India, not at the port. These are the services that catch it, the clusters they run in, and the reason we can fail a shipment without losing money by it.
