As of 27 October 2026: in the USA, wooden kitchen cabinets and vanities pay 25% too, and both 25% rates are due to rise on 1 January 2027. In the UK and the EU, wooden kitchen furniture and wooden parts are 0% only with proof of Indian origin (2% in the UK and 2.7% in the EU without it).

How it is worked out

Four things decide the duty you pay

  1. The tariff code. It follows what the product is: wood or metal, upholstered or not, kitchen or bedroom. In the USA, as of 27 October 2026, an upholstered wooden chair pays 25% and the same chair without upholstery 10%. Your customs broker classifies the goods.
  2. The country of origin. For these rates, India: where the furniture was made, not where it shipped from.
  3. Proof of origin. The 0% rates into the UK, the EU, Australia and the UAE need a certificate of origin or an origin statement. Your exporter arranges it before the goods ship.
  4. Import VAT or GST. Charged on top of the duty in most countries, at the rate shown for each destination.

Import tax, as of 27 Oct 2026: No federal VAT. A merchandise processing fee of 0.3464% of value (minimum $34.58, maximum $670.86 per entry, from 1 October 2026) and, for sea freight, a harbor maintenance fee of 0.125% are added.

The 25% Section 232 duty covers only four listed 10-digit lines for upholstered seats. An upholstered chair of teak, or a children's seat, pays the 10% instead, so the exact classification matters.

There is no duty-free allowance for small shipments: the $800 de minimis exemption is suspended for every country, so furniture sent by parcel pays the same duty as a container.

The IEEPA tariffs, which reached 50% on Indian goods in 2025, stopped on 24 February 2026, after the Supreme Court held that the law they relied on (IEEPA) does not authorise tariffs. Importers who paid them can claim refunds from US Customs; ask your customs broker.

No US–India trade agreement is in force, and the US tariff schedule gives India no preferential rate.

Furniture is not among the product groups for which India's GSP preference is suspended for 2026–2028.

The EU–India free trade agreement was concluded in 2026 but is not in force, so no agreement rate applies yet.

From 30 December 2026, the EU deforestation regulation (EUDR) applies to wooden furniture placed on the EU market by large and medium operators. That is a due-diligence duty, not a tariff.

How we keep this page current: every rate is re-checked against the official sources linked under each country every three months and whenever a government announces a change, and each change is added to the log above. Each rate shows the date it was checked; if that date is more than three months old, check your country's tool before you rely on the rate.

Where inspection fits

Duty follows the goods as they were built

The duty is set by what is in the container, not by what the order said. A chair specified plain that arrives upholstered, or a cabinet built as a kitchen unit, changes the tariff code and, in the USA, the rate. A pre-shipment inspection records what is actually in the cartons, with photos and a count against the packing list, so the description your broker classifies matches the goods.

We don't classify goods, issue certificates of origin or file customs entries: your exporter and customs broker do. We check the goods and the paperwork against each other. See all market guides and the compliance map.

Import duty questions

What is the import duty on furniture from India to the USA?

As of 27 October 2026, most Indian furniture pays 10%: the US base duty on furniture is free, and a Section 301 duty has added 10% to almost all Indian goods since 24 July 2026. Upholstered wooden sofas and chairs, and wooden kitchen cabinets and vanities, pay a 25% Section 232 duty instead, due to rise to 30% and 50% on 1 January 2027. Processing and harbor fees are added.

Is there import duty on furniture from India to the UK?

As of 27 October 2026, usually none. Most furniture is 0% under the UK tariff, and Indian furniture is 0% on every line, including kitchen furniture and wooden parts (2% otherwise), under the UK–India agreement in force since 15 July 2026, with proof of origin. Import VAT of 20% is charged.

What is the duty on furniture from India into Canada?

As of 27 October 2026, India pays Canada's full rates, because it lost the developing-country preference in 2015: 9.5% on household wooden furniture and seats, 8% on household metal furniture, and free on wooden office furniture and wooden parts. Metal-frame seats have also paid a 25% surtax since 26 December 2025. GST or HST is added.

Do I need a certificate of origin?

For the UK, the EU, Australia and the UAE, yes, or an origin statement: as of 27 October 2026, that is what gets Indian furniture the 0% rate. Your exporter arranges it before shipment. The USA and Canada give India no lower furniture rate, so the duty there does not depend on one.

Is there a duty-free allowance for small furniture shipments to the USA?

No, as of 27 October 2026. The US has suspended its $800 de minimis exemption for every country, so furniture sent by parcel pays the same duty as a container.
