Coat stands and hall racks: quality issues and what to check before you order and before packing

A coat stand has one job and one main risk: it must not tip when coats hang on one side. After that come hooks that pull out or have sharp ends, and base joints that loosen. Specify the base size, hook type and fixing in the order, then load sampled stands on one side and check every hook before shipment.

How it is usually made: A central post or frame on a weighted or splayed base, with wooden or metal hooks; often knock-down with a threaded joint between post and base. Wall-mounted hall racks are a board with hooks.

Before you order

Put these in the purchase order

An inspector can only hold the factory to what is written down. Add your AQL, moisture limit and golden sample to every order as well.

Quality issues

Defects to look for on a solid wood coat stand

Usual class by our default definitions: critical is unsafe or unshippable, major affects function, saleability or durability, minor is cosmetic. Your own defect list always overrides it.

DefectUsual classUsual causeHow it is checked
Stand tips when loaded on one side Critical Base too small or too light for the height. Hang weight on one side of sampled stands on a flat floor.
Hooks pulling out or with sharp ends Critical Short screws, hooks glued only, burrs on metal hooks. Pull each hook by hand; run a hand over the ends.
Post loose on the base Major Threaded joint not tightening fully. Assemble and rock the post.
Post leaning Major Base drilled off-square. Check the assembled post is upright.
Finish runs on turned parts Minor Spraying round sections too heavily. Visual check under daylight.
Stage by stage

What to check during production, at inspection and before packing

During production

  • Base and post joint fit on first-off parts.
  • Hook fixing method on the first units.
  • Moisture of post stock.

During-production inspection

At pre-shipment inspection

  • Assemble sampled stands and load them on one side; watch for tipping.
  • Pull-test every hook and check the ends.
  • Rock the post on the base; check it stands upright.
  • Hall racks: check fixing holes and supplied wall fixings.

Pre-shipment inspection

Before packing

  • Hooks protected so they cannot pierce the carton.
  • Post and base packed so the threaded joint cannot be damaged.
  • Hardware and wall fixings sealed in a labelled bag.

Packaging and transit validation

Every solid wood order

Moisture, finish and sampling

  • Moisture: put a limit for your destination in the PO and have it read with a pin meter on sampled pieces. Wood shipped wet cracks after delivery. Targets by market are in the wood guide.
  • Finish: approve a golden sample and hold every batch to it; finishes cured in humid weather can bloom in transit.
  • Sampling: AQL 2.5 for major and 4.0 for minor defects at General Level II by default. The AQL calculator gives the sample size for your order.
  • Hardware: count kits against the bill of materials; wrong or missing hardware turns a sound product into a return.

Coat stands and hall racks: questions

How do I know a coat stand will not tip?

Load sampled stands on one side on a flat floor at inspection. Base size and weight in the PO are what make it pass.

Are metal hooks a quality risk?

They can be if burrs or sharp ends are left on them or they are poorly fixed. Pull each hook and check its ends at inspection.
