Benches: quality issues and what to check before you order and before packing

A solid wood bench seats several people on a long span, so it fails by sagging in the middle, loosening at the leg joints, or, on storage benches, through lids that slam or hinges that pull out. Specify seat thickness, legs and any lid stay in the order, then load and sit-test sampled benches before shipment.

How it is usually made: A long seat on legs or trestles, often with stretchers; storage benches have a hinged lid, and some have an upholstered cushion.

Before you order

Put these in the purchase order

An inspector can only hold the factory to what is written down. Add your AQL, moisture limit and golden sample to every order as well.

SpecifyWhy it matters
Seat thickness and spanA long seat must not sag under several sitters.
Leg joinery and stretchersHow legs join the seat and whether stretchers are included.
Lid stay for storage benchesA stay that stops the lid dropping on hands.
Cushion or upholsteryAn upholstered seat brings UK fire rules into scope.
Quality issues

Defects to look for on a solid wood bench

Usual class by our default definitions: critical is unsafe or unshippable, major affects function, saleability or durability, minor is cosmetic. Your own defect list always overrides it.

DefectUsual classUsual causeHow it is checked
Storage lid dropping on hands Critical No lid stay fitted. Open the lid and let go on sampled units.
Seat sagging in the middle Major Seat too thin for the span; no centre support. Load the seat centre and sight along it.
Leg joints loose Major Joints too small for the leverage of a long seat. Rack and sit-test.
Bench rocks on a flat floor Major Legs uneven. Rock test.
Cushion loose or marked Minor Fixing missing; handling marks. Check cushion fixing and cover.
Stage by stage

What to check during production, at inspection and before packing

During production

  • Seat thickness and leg joints on first units.
  • Moisture of seat stock.

During-production inspection

At pre-shipment inspection

  • Load and sit-test the seat centre; check for sag.
  • Rack the legs; rock test.
  • Storage benches: cycle the lid and check the stay.
  • Check cushion fixing and covering.

Pre-shipment inspection

Before packing

  • Long seat supported so it cannot bow.
  • Lid secured closed; cushions wrapped against moisture.
  • Leg ends and corners protected.

Packaging and transit validation

Every solid wood order

Moisture, finish and sampling

  • Moisture: put a limit for your destination in the PO and have it read with a pin meter on sampled pieces. Wood shipped wet cracks after delivery. Targets by market are in the wood guide.
  • Finish: approve a golden sample and hold every batch to it; finishes cured in humid weather can bloom in transit.
  • Sampling: AQL 2.5 for major and 4.0 for minor defects at General Level II by default. The AQL calculator gives the sample size for your order.
  • Hardware: count kits against the bill of materials; wrong or missing hardware turns a sound product into a return.
Market rules

Rules that may apply to a bench

RuleWhen it applies
UK fire safety If the seat is upholstered or has a fixed cushion.
EN 12520 (domestic seating) Often referenced by EU buyers for strength and durability.

Benches: questions

Why do long wooden benches sag?

The seat is too thin for its span or has no centre support. Specify thickness and support in the PO and load the centre at inspection.

What is the main risk on a storage bench?

A lid with no stay dropping on hands. Check the stay on every sampled unit.
