Outdoor wooden furniture: quality issues and what to check before you order and before packing
Outdoor wooden furniture fails where weather gets in: hardware that rusts and stains the wood, finishes that are not meant for outdoor use, joints and flat surfaces that hold water, and folding parts that trap fingers. Specify the wood, hardware grade, finish and drainage in the order, then check hardware, mechanisms and stability on sampled pieces before shipment.
How it is usually made: Teak, acacia or other dense hardwoods made into fixed or folding chairs, tables, loungers and benches, joined with bolts or joinery, usually oiled or with an outdoor finish.
Put these in the purchase order
An inspector can only hold the factory to what is written down. Add your AQL, moisture limit and golden sample to every order as well.
| Specify | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Wood species and grade | Species, grade and the share of sapwood allowed; claims about weather resistance need evidence. |
| Hardware grade | Stainless steel or brass fixings, with the grade stated. Plain steel rusts and stains the wood. |
| Finish | Oil or an outdoor finish, against a sample, and care instructions. |
| Drainage and water traps | Slat gaps and sloped surfaces so water runs off. |
| Folding mechanisms and cushions | Locking for folding pieces; cushion fabric and fill. |
Defects to look for on a outdoor wooden piece
Usual class by our default definitions: critical is unsafe or unshippable, major affects function, saleability or durability, minor is cosmetic. Your own defect list always overrides it.
| Defect | Usual class | Usual cause | How it is checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Folding piece collapses or traps fingers | Critical | No lock, or a lock that does not engage. | Open, close and lock every sampled folding piece; sit-test. |
| Plain steel hardware | Major | Cheaper fixings substituted. | Check fixings with a magnet and against the specification. |
| Joints loose, piece rocks | Major | Bolts not tightened, wood above the moisture limit. | Rock and rack test after assembly. |
| Water traps, no drainage | Major | Slat gaps or slopes missing. | Check slat gaps and surfaces against the drawing. |
| Cracks and checks in the wood | Major | Wet wood drying in sun. | Pin-meter readings; inspect end grain. |
| Finish uneven or off the sample | Minor | Batch variation. | Compare with the sample. |
What to check during production, at inspection and before packing
During production
- Moisture and grade of the wood before machining.
- Hardware against the specified grade before assembly.
- Folding mechanism on first units.
At pre-shipment inspection
- Cycle and lock folding pieces; sit-test.
- Check hardware with a magnet and count it.
- Rock test; check slat gaps and drainage.
- Moisture readings; inspect finish against the sample.
Before packing
- Folding pieces locked shut for transit.
- Desiccant on humid routes, so oiled wood does not mould.
- Cushions packed separately, wrapped against moisture.
Moisture, finish and sampling
- Moisture: put a limit for your destination in the PO and have it read with a pin meter on sampled pieces. Wood shipped wet cracks after delivery. Targets by market are in the wood guide.
- Finish: approve a golden sample and hold every batch to it; finishes cured in humid weather can bloom in transit.
- Sampling: AQL 2.5 for major and 4.0 for minor defects at General Level II by default. The AQL calculator gives the sample size for your order.
- Hardware: count kits against the bill of materials; wrong or missing hardware turns a sound product into a return.
Rules that may apply to a outdoor wooden piece
| Rule | When it applies |
|---|---|
| Lacey Act | For US orders. |
| EN 581 (outdoor furniture) | Often referenced by EU buyers for safety and strength. |
| UK fire safety | If cushions are sold with the furniture for the UK. |
Outdoor wooden furniture: questions
What hardware should outdoor wooden furniture use?
Stainless steel or brass, with the grade stated in the PO. A magnet test at inspection catches plain steel substituted.
Can I claim teak furniture is weatherproof?
Only with evidence. Write the species, grade and finish in the PO, and treat performance claims as needing test data.
