Trunks and blanket boxes: quality issues and what to check before you order and before packing
A solid wood trunk or blanket box fails at the lid: lids that drop on hands, hinges that pull out of the wood, and latches that can shut a child inside. After that come cracked panels and rough metal fittings. Specify a lid stay, hinge fixing and latch type in the order, then cycle the lid on every sampled unit before shipment.
How it is usually made: A solid wood box with a hinged lid, sometimes with metal corners, straps and handles, a lock or hasp, and a lining.
Put these in the purchase order
An inspector can only hold the factory to what is written down. Add your AQL, moisture limit and golden sample to every order as well.
| Specify | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Lid stay | A stay that holds the lid open and stops it dropping. |
| Hinge type and fixing | Hinge size and screws long enough to hold in the lid and back. |
| Latch and lock | No latch that locks by itself; keys counted if a lock is fitted. |
| Metal fittings | Corners, straps and handles fixed flush with no sharp edges. |
| Moisture limit | Wide panels crack when wet wood dries. |
Defects to look for on a solid wood trunk
Usual class by our default definitions: critical is unsafe or unshippable, major affects function, saleability or durability, minor is cosmetic. Your own defect list always overrides it.
| Defect | Usual class | Usual cause | How it is checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lid drops without a stay | Critical | Stay missing or under-rated. | Open the lid and let go on sampled units. |
| Latch locks by itself when the lid closes | Critical | Self-latching hasp fitted. | Close the lid and check it can be opened from inside. |
| Hinge screws pulling out | Major | Short screws in thin wood or end grain. | Cycle the lid; check hinge screws. |
| Sharp metal corners or straps | Major | Edges not finished or not fixed flush. | Hand check along all metal fittings. |
| Cracked panels | Major | Above the moisture limit. | Pin-meter readings; inspect panels. |
| Lining loose or marked | Minor | Rushed fitting. | Inspect inside. |
What to check during production, at inspection and before packing
During production
- Hinge and stay fitting on first units.
- Moisture of panel stock.
At pre-shipment inspection
- Cycle every sampled lid; let go to test the stay.
- Check the latch cannot lock the lid by itself; count keys.
- Hand check metal fittings; inspect panels and lining.
Before packing
- Lid secured closed with no strain on the hinges.
- Metal corners protected so they cannot cut through the carton.
- Keys taped inside in a labelled bag.
Moisture, finish and sampling
- Moisture: put a limit for your destination in the PO and have it read with a pin meter on sampled pieces. Wood shipped wet cracks after delivery. Targets by market are in the wood guide.
- Finish: approve a golden sample and hold every batch to it; finishes cured in humid weather can bloom in transit.
- Sampling: AQL 2.5 for major and 4.0 for minor defects at General Level II by default. The AQL calculator gives the sample size for your order.
- Hardware: count kits against the bill of materials; wrong or missing hardware turns a sound product into a return.
Rules that may apply to a trunk
| Rule | When it applies |
|---|---|
| Toy chest rules (ASTM F834 in the US) | If the box is marketed for storing children’s toys: lid support and ventilation requirements apply. |
| Lacey Act | For US orders. |
Trunks and blanket boxes: questions
What is the main safety risk on a wooden trunk?
The lid: one that drops on hands, or a latch that locks a child inside. Check the stay and latch on every sampled unit.
Can a blanket box be sold as a toy chest?
Only if it meets the toy chest rules for your market, such as lid support and ventilation in the US. Decide before ordering.
