Sanding marks and surface damage
Swirl and grinding marks, torn grain, blotchy stain and small dents that show through the finish on a solid wood top.
Why it happens
Coarse or rushed sanding with a rotary sander leaves swirl marks that stay invisible on bare wood and show up as soon as stain or a dark finish goes on.
Grain tears out where the board direction changes or at a joint, and end grain soaks up more stain than the face, so corners finish darker and blotchy.
Finished pieces stacked or moved without protection pick up dents and marks before they are packed. Sample report 01 (Jodhpur, November 2022) recorded grinding marks on the surface of a dining table, counted as minor.

How to specify against it
A defect you can name in the purchase order is a defect an inspector can fail the shipment on. One you only describe in an email is not.
- A golden sample for the finish, held by both sides, and the rule that every top is matched to it.
- Which surfaces count as visible (top, front, edges) and whether marks there are minor or major in your defect list.
- Sanding through a final fine grit before finishing, and an end-grain sealer before stain on edges and corners.
- Protection between finished pieces from the finishing line to the carton.
