Coffee tables: quality issues and what to check before you order and before packing
A solid wood coffee table fails at its top and its mechanisms: tops that crack or cup, lift-tops that trap fingers or drop, drawers that stick, glass tops that chip, and tables that rock. Specify the top, any mechanism and edge finish in the order, then check flatness, mechanisms and wobble on sampled tables before shipment.
How it is usually made: A solid top on legs or a base, sometimes with a lower shelf, drawers, a lift-top mechanism or a glass insert.
Put these in the purchase order
An inspector can only hold the factory to what is written down. Add your AQL, moisture limit and golden sample to every order as well.
| Specify | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Top fixing and moisture limit | A top fixed so it can move, and a moisture limit for the destination. |
| Lift-top or drawer mechanism | Mechanism type and supplier; lift-tops can trap fingers if badly chosen. |
| Glass specification | If glass is used: type, thickness and edge finish. |
| Edge and corner profile | Rounded or sharp edges, stated in the drawing. |
Defects to look for on a solid wood coffee table
Usual class by our default definitions: critical is unsafe or unshippable, major affects function, saleability or durability, minor is cosmetic. Your own defect list always overrides it.
| Defect | Usual class | Usual cause | How it is checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lift-top dropping or trapping fingers | Critical | Under-rated or missing mechanism. | Cycle the lift-top on sampled units. |
| Cracked or cupped top | Major | Above the moisture limit, top fixed tight. | Pin-meter readings; straight edge on the top. |
| Table rocks on a flat floor | Major | Legs uneven. | Rock test. |
| Chipped glass or loose insert | Major | Edges not finished, insert not seated. | Inspect glass edges and seating. |
| Drawers sticking | Major | Runners out of line. | Cycle every drawer. |
| Finish marks on the top | Minor | Handled before the finish cured. | Raking light across the top. |

What to check during production, at inspection and before packing
During production
- Moisture of top boards before glue-up.
- Mechanism model on first units.
At pre-shipment inspection
- Straight edge and moisture readings on sampled tops.
- Cycle lift-tops and drawers.
- Rock test on a flat surface.
- Inspect glass and edges; run a hand around corners.
Before packing
- Top packed with full-face protection and corner protectors.
- Glass packed separately with edge protection.
- Lift-top locked closed for transit.
Moisture, finish and sampling
- Moisture: put a limit for your destination in the PO and have it read with a pin meter on sampled pieces. Wood shipped wet cracks after delivery. Targets by market are in the wood guide.
- Finish: approve a golden sample and hold every batch to it; finishes cured in humid weather can bloom in transit.
- Sampling: AQL 2.5 for major and 4.0 for minor defects at General Level II by default. The AQL calculator gives the sample size for your order.
- Hardware: count kits against the bill of materials; wrong or missing hardware turns a sound product into a return.
Rules that may apply to a coffee table
| Rule | When it applies |
|---|---|
| Formaldehyde (TSCA Title VI, REACH) | If any part uses plywood, MDF or particleboard. |
| EN 12521 (domestic tables) | Often referenced by EU buyers for strength and stability. |
Coffee tables: questions
What should I check on a lift-top coffee table?
That the mechanism holds the top open, lets it down gently and does not trap fingers. Cycle it on every sampled unit.
Why does a solid wood coffee table top crack?
For the same reason dining tops do: wood shipped above its moisture limit, or a top fixed too tight to move as it dries.
