Console tables: quality issues and what to check before you order and before packing

A console table is tall for its depth, so it can tip if leaned on or bumped, and its narrow top and slim legs show every wobble and crack. Specify depth, leg fixing, any drawers and wall fixing in the order, then check stability, wobble and drawers on sampled tables before shipment.

How it is usually made: A narrow top on four slim legs or a frame, sometimes with drawers and a lower shelf; legs often knock-down.

Before you order

Put these in the purchase order

An inspector can only hold the factory to what is written down. Add your AQL, moisture limit and golden sample to every order as well.

SpecifyWhy it matters
Depth and heightA narrow, tall table is less stable; agree the proportions and a wall fixing if needed.
Leg fixingBracket and bolt or fixed joinery, with hardware listed.
Drawers and stopsRunner type and stops for any drawers.
Moisture limit and golden sampleFor the top and legs.
Quality issues

Defects to look for on a solid wood console table

Usual class by our default definitions: critical is unsafe or unshippable, major affects function, saleability or durability, minor is cosmetic. Your own defect list always overrides it.

DefectUsual classUsual causeHow it is checked
Table tips when bumped or leaned on Critical Shallow depth for the height, no wall fixing. Push the top edge on a flat floor.
Table rocks or legs loose Major Legs uneven, brackets not tight. Assemble and rock-test.
Cracked top Major Above the moisture limit. Pin-meter readings; inspect the top.
Drawers sticking or pulling out Major Runners out of line; no stop. Cycle drawers.
Finish marks on the top Minor Handling before cure. Raking light.

Stage by stage

What to check during production, at inspection and before packing

During production

  • Leg fixing on first assembled tables.
  • Moisture of top stock.

During-production inspection

At pre-shipment inspection

  • Assemble legs from the packed hardware; rock test.
  • Check stability by pushing the top edge on a flat floor.
  • Cycle drawers and check stops.
  • Count hardware and any wall fixing.

Pre-shipment inspection

Before packing

  • Top protected on both faces and corners.
  • Slim legs packed so they cannot bend or strike the top.
  • Hardware and wall fixing sealed and labelled.

Packaging and transit validation

Every solid wood order

Moisture, finish and sampling

  • Moisture: put a limit for your destination in the PO and have it read with a pin meter on sampled pieces. Wood shipped wet cracks after delivery. Targets by market are in the wood guide.
  • Finish: approve a golden sample and hold every batch to it; finishes cured in humid weather can bloom in transit.
  • Sampling: AQL 2.5 for major and 4.0 for minor defects at General Level II by default. The AQL calculator gives the sample size for your order.
  • Hardware: count kits against the bill of materials; wrong or missing hardware turns a sound product into a return.

Console tables: questions

Should a console table be fixed to the wall?

If it is tall and shallow, a supplied wall fixing removes the tipping risk. Decide in the PO and check stability at inspection.

What fails on slim-legged console tables?

Leg joints and brackets. Assemble sampled tables from the packed hardware and rock-test them.
