Side tables and nesting tables: quality issues and what to check before you order and before packing

A solid wood side table is small, light and moved often, so it fails through wobble on slim legs, tops that crack or cup, and, on nesting sets, tables that bind, rub each other’s finish or trap fingers as they slide together. Specify sizes, leg fixing and nesting clearances in the order, then rock-test and nest every sampled set before shipment.

How it is usually made: A small solid top on three or four legs or a pedestal, sometimes with a drawer or shelf; nesting tables are two or three sizes made to slide under each other.

Before you order

Put these in the purchase order

An inspector can only hold the factory to what is written down. Add your AQL, moisture limit and golden sample to every order as well.

SpecifyWhy it matters
Sizes and nesting clearancesFor nests: the gap between tables, so they slide without binding or rubbing.
Leg fixingFixed joinery or bolt-on legs, with hardware listed.
Moisture limit and golden sampleSmall tops still crack; finish must match across a nest.
Felt pads or glidesSo nested tables and floors are not scratched.
Quality issues

Defects to look for on a solid wood side table

Usual class by our default definitions: critical is unsafe or unshippable, major affects function, saleability or durability, minor is cosmetic. Your own defect list always overrides it.

DefectUsual classUsual causeHow it is checked
Table rocks or legs loose Major Legs uneven, brackets not tight. Rock test on a flat surface.
Nesting tables bind or rub Major Clearances too tight, tables out of square. Slide every sampled nest in and out.
Finger trap between nesting tables Major No gap where hands hold the table. Nest the tables holding them as a user would.
Cracked or cupped top Major Above the moisture limit. Pin-meter readings; straight edge.
Colour differs within a nest Minor Tables finished in different batches. Compare tables of a set side by side.

Stage by stage

What to check during production, at inspection and before packing

During production

  • Moisture of top stock.
  • Nesting fit on the first sets.

During-production inspection

At pre-shipment inspection

  • Rock test each table on a flat surface.
  • Slide nests in and out; check clearances, rubbing and finger gaps.
  • Moisture and straight-edge checks on tops.
  • Compare finish across a nest and against the golden sample.

Pre-shipment inspection

Before packing

  • Nested tables separated by protection so finishes cannot rub.
  • Legs and corners protected.
  • A nest packed as one numbered set.

Packaging and transit validation

Every solid wood order

Moisture, finish and sampling

  • Moisture: put a limit for your destination in the PO and have it read with a pin meter on sampled pieces. Wood shipped wet cracks after delivery. Targets by market are in the wood guide.
  • Finish: approve a golden sample and hold every batch to it; finishes cured in humid weather can bloom in transit.
  • Sampling: AQL 2.5 for major and 4.0 for minor defects at General Level II by default. The AQL calculator gives the sample size for your order.
  • Hardware: count kits against the bill of materials; wrong or missing hardware turns a sound product into a return.
Market rules

Rules that may apply to a side table

RuleWhen it applies
Formaldehyde (TSCA Title VI, REACH) If any part uses plywood or MDF.
EN 12521 (domestic tables) Often referenced by EU buyers for strength and stability.

Side tables and nesting tables: questions

What should be checked on nesting tables?

That every table slides in and out without binding or rubbing, that there is room for fingers, and that the colour matches across the set.

Why do small side tables wobble?

Slim legs cut unevenly or fixed loosely. A rock test on a flat surface catches it.
