Bedside tables: quality issues and what to check before you order and before packing

A solid wood bedside table is small but sold in pairs and opened every day: drawers that stick or pull out, left and right units that do not match, tops that crack, and units that rock. Specify runners, stops and handles in the order, then cycle every drawer and line pairs up for colour before shipment.

How it is usually made: A small carcass on legs or a plinth with one or two drawers and sometimes an open shelf or door; drawer bottoms are often plywood.

Before you order

Put these in the purchase order

An inspector can only hold the factory to what is written down. Add your AQL, moisture limit and golden sample to every order as well.

SpecifyWhy it matters
Runner type and drawer stopsWooden or metal runners, and a stop so the drawer cannot be pulled out and dropped.
Size and heightWith tolerances, and whether the units must match a bed height.
Pairs and handingWhether units are sold as matched pairs, and any left and right versions.
Drawer bottom materialSolid or plywood; plywood brings formaldehyde rules into scope.
Golden sample for colourPairs are judged side by side in a bedroom.
Quality issues

Defects to look for on a solid wood bedside table

Usual class by our default definitions: critical is unsafe or unshippable, major affects function, saleability or durability, minor is cosmetic. Your own defect list always overrides it.

DefectUsual classUsual causeHow it is checked
Drawer pulls out and drops Major No stop fitted. Pull every drawer fully open on sampled units.
Drawers sticking or racking Major Runners out of line, drawer box out of square. Cycle every drawer.
Cracked top Major Above the moisture limit; top fixed too tight. Pin-meter readings; inspect the top and end grain.
Unit rocks on a flat floor Major Legs uneven. Rock test on a flat surface.
Colour mismatch within a pair Major Units finished in different batches. Line pairs up against the golden sample.
Handle loose or misaligned Minor Holes drilled off-centre, screws not tightened. Check handles on every sampled unit.
Stage by stage

What to check during production, at inspection and before packing

During production

  • Runner fitting on first drawer boxes.
  • Moisture of top stock.
  • Drawer stop fitted on first units.

During-production inspection

At pre-shipment inspection

  • Cycle every drawer; pull fully open to check the stop.
  • Rock test on a flat surface.
  • Line up pairs for colour against the golden sample.
  • Check handles, top and finish inside drawers.

Pre-shipment inspection

Before packing

  • Drawers secured so they cannot slide out in transit.
  • Pairs packed together where they are sold as pairs.
  • Legs and top corners protected.

Moisture, finish and sampling

  • Moisture: put a limit for your destination in the PO and have it read with a pin meter on sampled pieces. Wood shipped wet cracks after delivery. Targets by market are in the wood guide.
  • Finish: approve a golden sample and hold every batch to it; finishes cured in humid weather can bloom in transit.
  • Sampling: AQL 2.5 for major and 4.0 for minor defects at General Level II by default. The AQL calculator gives the sample size for your order.
  • Hardware: count kits against the bill of materials; wrong or missing hardware turns a sound product into a return.
Market rules

Rules that may apply to a bedside table

RuleWhen it applies
US tip-over rule Only if the unit meets all three thresholds: at least 27 in tall, 30 lb and 3.2 ft³ of enclosed storage. Most bedside tables are under 27 in.
Formaldehyde (TSCA Title VI, REACH) If drawer bottoms or panels are plywood or MDF.

Bedside tables: questions

Is a bedside table covered by the US tip-over rule?

Only if it is at least 27 inches tall, 30 lb and 3.2 cubic feet of enclosed storage. A unit under 27 inches tall is outside it.

What is the most common bedside table complaint?

Drawers: sticking, or pulling out and dropping because no stop was fitted. Cycle every drawer at inspection.
