Tips over with drawers open
A drawer unit that falls forward when its drawers are opened: a critical defect that fails the lot on its own.
Why it happens
Heavy drawers on a shallow carcass move the centre of gravity forward as they open. With every drawer out, the unit falls towards the user.
It is a design fault, so it affects every unit of the style. Sample report 05 (Jodhpur, January 2023) found a drawer unit that tipped forward with all drawers open and had no provision for an anti-tip kit; the lot was rejected.
For the US, free-standing clothing storage units above the size thresholds must meet the tip-over rule, with a test report, restraint and warning label.
How to specify against it
A defect you can name in the purchase order is a defect an inspector can fail the shipment on. One you only describe in an email is not.
- For US orders in scope: the tip-over test report, restraint and warning label as conditions of the order.
- For every market: a supplied wall fixing on tall or deep-drawer units, and drawer stops.
- Approve stability on the pre-production sample, before the whole lot is built to the same design.
The inspection point
Each of these is a numbered check on a published scope, so you can see exactly which visit finds this and when.
