Desks and study tables: quality issues and what to check before you order and before packing

A solid wood desk is leaned on, written on and loaded with equipment, so it fails by racking side to side, through drawers that stick or drop, tops that crack or cup, and knock-down fittings that do not line up. Specify size, height, drawers, cable openings and any modesty panel in the order, then assemble, load and rack-test sampled desks before shipment.

How it is usually made: A solid top on legs or pedestals of drawers, braced by an apron, rails or a modesty panel; usually knock-down for shipping.

Before you order

Put these in the purchase order

An inspector can only hold the factory to what is written down. Add your AQL, moisture limit and golden sample to every order as well.

SpecifyWhy it matters
Height and top sizeWith tolerances; desk height matters to the end user.
BracingApron, rails or modesty panel, so the desk does not rack when written on.
Drawers, runners and stopsRunner type and stops for every drawer.
Cable openingsSize and position of grommets or cut-outs.
Moisture limit and golden sampleFor the top and drawer fronts.
Quality issues

Defects to look for on a solid wood desk

Usual class by our default definitions: critical is unsafe or unshippable, major affects function, saleability or durability, minor is cosmetic. Your own defect list always overrides it.

DefectUsual classUsual causeHow it is checked
Desk racks side to side Major Bracing missing or weak; fittings loose. Assemble and push the top sideways.
Drawers sticking or pulling out Major Runners out of line; no stops. Cycle every drawer and pull it fully open.
Knock-down fittings not lining up Major Holes drilled off-line. Assemble sampled desks from the packed kit.
Cracked or cupped top Major Above the moisture limit, top fixed tight. Pin-meter readings; straight edge.
Cable openings missing or misplaced Minor Drawing not followed. Check against the drawing.
Stage by stage

What to check during production, at inspection and before packing

During production

  • Moisture of top stock.
  • Drilling of knock-down fittings on first parts.

During-production inspection

At pre-shipment inspection

  • Assemble from the packed kit; rack and rock test.
  • Cycle drawers and check stops.
  • Measure height and top; check cable openings.
  • Moisture and finish checks on the top.

Pre-shipment inspection

Before packing

  • Top packed flat with full-face protection.
  • Drawers secured or packed separately.
  • Hardware kit and instructions sealed and labelled.

Packaging and transit validation

Every solid wood order

Moisture, finish and sampling

  • Moisture: put a limit for your destination in the PO and have it read with a pin meter on sampled pieces. Wood shipped wet cracks after delivery. Targets by market are in the wood guide.
  • Finish: approve a golden sample and hold every batch to it; finishes cured in humid weather can bloom in transit.
  • Sampling: AQL 2.5 for major and 4.0 for minor defects at General Level II by default. The AQL calculator gives the sample size for your order.
  • Hardware: count kits against the bill of materials; wrong or missing hardware turns a sound product into a return.
Market rules

Rules that may apply to a desk

RuleWhen it applies
Formaldehyde (TSCA Title VI, REACH) If panels, backs or drawer bottoms are plywood or MDF.
EN 527 (office work tables) Often referenced by EU buyers if the desk is sold as office furniture.

Desks and study tables: questions

Why does a wooden desk wobble when I write on it?

It lacks bracing or the fittings are loose. Specify an apron, rails or a modesty panel and rack-test the assembled desk.

What should I check on a knock-down desk?

Assemble sampled desks from the packed kit and instructions: whether the holes line up and the desk stands square.
