Dressing tables: quality issues and what to check before you order and before packing
A solid wood dressing table combines a table, drawers and a mirror, so it fails at the mirror fixing, at drawers that stick or drop, at a top that cracks, and by tipping if the mirror is tall and heavy. Specify the mirror, its fixing, the runners and any stool in the order, then check mirror fixing, drawers and stability on sampled units before shipment.
How it is usually made: A table or small chest with drawers, a mirror fixed to the back or on a separate frame, and often a matching stool; usually shipped knock-down.
Put these in the purchase order
An inspector can only hold the factory to what is written down. Add your AQL, moisture limit and golden sample to every order as well.
| Specify | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Mirror and its fixing | Glass, backing and how the mirror frame bolts to the table. |
| Drawers, runners and stops | Runner type and stops for every drawer. |
| Wall fixing | If the mirror makes the unit top-heavy. |
| Matching stool | Height and finish against the table. |
| Moisture limit and golden sample | For the top, drawer fronts and mirror frame. |
Defects to look for on a solid wood dressing table
Usual class by our default definitions: critical is unsafe or unshippable, major affects function, saleability or durability, minor is cosmetic. Your own defect list always overrides it.
| Defect | Usual class | Usual cause | How it is checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mirror frame loose or unit tips forward | Critical | Mirror bolted weakly to the table; heavy mirror on a shallow base. | Assemble the mirror and push it front to back; open drawers and check stability. |
| Mirror glass cracked or edges sharp | Critical | Glass forced in, edges not finished. | Inspect glass face and edges. |
| Drawers sticking or pulling out | Major | Runners out of line; no stops. | Cycle every drawer. |
| Cracked top | Major | Above the moisture limit. | Pin-meter readings; inspect the top. |
| Stool or mirror frame off the table finish | Minor | Parts finished in different batches. | Compare parts side by side. |
What to check during production, at inspection and before packing
During production
- Mirror mounting on the first units.
- Moisture of top and frame stock.
At pre-shipment inspection
- Assemble the mirror from the packed hardware; check fixing and stability.
- Inspect mirror glass, edges and backing.
- Cycle drawers and check stops.
- Compare table, mirror frame and stool finish.
Before packing
- Mirror packed separately with face and corner protection.
- Drawers secured; top protected.
- Mirror bolts, wall fixing and stool hardware sealed and labelled.
Moisture, finish and sampling
- Moisture: put a limit for your destination in the PO and have it read with a pin meter on sampled pieces. Wood shipped wet cracks after delivery. Targets by market are in the wood guide.
- Finish: approve a golden sample and hold every batch to it; finishes cured in humid weather can bloom in transit.
- Sampling: AQL 2.5 for major and 4.0 for minor defects at General Level II by default. The AQL calculator gives the sample size for your order.
- Hardware: count kits against the bill of materials; wrong or missing hardware turns a sound product into a return.
Rules that may apply to a dressing table
| Rule | When it applies |
|---|---|
| US tip-over rule | May apply if the drawers are for clothing storage and the unit meets the size thresholds. Check with your compliance team. |
| Formaldehyde (TSCA Title VI, REACH) | If the back, mirror backing or drawer bottoms are plywood or MDF. |
Dressing tables: questions
What fails first on a dressing table?
The mirror fixing and the drawers. Assemble the mirror from the packed hardware and cycle every drawer at inspection.
How should a dressing table mirror be packed?
Separately, with full face and corner protection, and the mounting bolts sealed with the unit.
