Iron and wood furniture: quality issues and what to check before you order and before packing
Iron and wood furniture fails where the two materials meet and at the metal itself: cracked or porous welds, sharp edges and burrs, coating that chips or lets rust through, and bolts into wood that loosen as the wood dries. Specify the steel section, weld finish, coating and fixing method in the order, then check welds, coating adhesion and stability on sampled pieces before shipment.
How it is usually made: An iron or steel frame, welded or bolted, with solid wood tops, shelves or panels fixed by screws or bolts through the metal; the metal is usually powder-coated or painted.
Put these in the purchase order
An inspector can only hold the factory to what is written down. Add your AQL, moisture limit and golden sample to every order as well.
| Specify | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Steel section and wall thickness | Tube or bar size and thickness for each part, so the frame carries the load. |
| Weld finish | Whether welds are ground smooth or left visible, and that all joints are welded fully, not tacked. |
| Coating type, colour and pre-treatment | Powder coat or paint, colour and sheen against a sample, and the cleaning or pre-treatment before coating. Pre-treatment decides whether rust comes through. |
| Metal-to-wood fixing | Bolts into threaded inserts rather than screws straight into the wood, with slotted holes where the wood must move. |
| Moisture limit and glides | Wood moisture for the destination, and glides or caps on the metal feet so they do not mark floors. |
Defects to look for on a wood-and-iron piece
Usual class by our default definitions: critical is unsafe or unshippable, major affects function, saleability or durability, minor is cosmetic. Your own defect list always overrides it.
| Defect | Usual class | Usual cause | How it is checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cracked, porous or incomplete welds | Critical | Tack welds left unfinished, poor penetration. | Inspect every visible weld; load the frame and look for movement. |
| Sharp edges, burrs or weld spatter | Critical | Cut ends and welds not ground or capped. | Run a gloved hand along edges, tube ends and under the frame. |
| Coating chips, poor adhesion | Major | Metal not cleaned or pre-treated before coating; coating too thin. | Cross-cut adhesion test on a hidden area, referencing ISO 2409 or ASTM D3359; coating thickness gauge if specified. |
| Rust spots or rust at welds | Major | Coating over rust or mill scale; moisture in transit. | Inspect welds, joints and the inside of open tube ends. |
| Wood loose on the frame | Major | Screws straight into the wood, holes not slotted, wood shrinking after delivery. | Rock and push the top or shelves on the assembled piece. |
| Frame out of square, piece rocks | Major | Frame welded without a jig and pulled out of line by the heat. | Rock test on a flat surface; check the diagonals. |
| Coating colour or sheen off the sample | Minor | Different powder batch or curing. | Compare against the approved coating sample. |

What to check during production, at inspection and before packing
During production
- Steel section and weld quality on the first frames, before coating.
- Frame square on a jig; cleaning or pre-treatment before coating.
- Moisture of the wood parts before they are drilled and fixed.
At pre-shipment inspection
- Inspect welds and run a gloved hand along all edges and tube ends.
- Cross-cut adhesion test on a hidden area; look for rust at welds and joints.
- Assemble sampled pieces from the packed hardware; rock test and push on tops and shelves.
- Check wood finish and coating colour against their samples.
- Check glides or caps are fitted.
Before packing
- Metal frame wrapped so coated surfaces cannot rub through the carton or against the wood.
- Tube ends capped; corners and feet protected.
- Desiccant where the route is humid, to stop rust and protect the wood.
- Hardware kit sealed and counted.
Moisture, finish and sampling
- Moisture: put a limit for your destination in the PO and have it read with a pin meter on sampled pieces. Wood shipped wet cracks after delivery. Targets by market are in the wood guide.
- Finish: approve a golden sample and hold every batch to it; finishes cured in humid weather can bloom in transit.
- Sampling: AQL 2.5 for major and 4.0 for minor defects at General Level II by default. The AQL calculator gives the sample size for your order.
- Hardware: count kits against the bill of materials; wrong or missing hardware turns a sound product into a return.
Rules that may apply to a wood-and-iron piece
| Rule | When it applies |
|---|---|
| Lacey Act | For the wooden parts on US orders. |
| Formaldehyde (TSCA Title VI, REACH) | If tops or shelves are plywood, MDF or particleboard. |
| US tip-over rule | If a drawer unit is made for clothing storage and meets the size thresholds. |
Iron and wood furniture: questions
What should I check on iron and wood furniture?
The welds, edges and coating on the metal, and how the wood is fixed to it. A sharp edge or a cracked weld is critical; chipping coating and loose wood are major.
Why does rust appear on powder-coated furniture?
Usually because the steel was not cleaned or pre-treated before coating, or the coating is thin at welds. Check pre-treatment during production and adhesion at inspection.
Why do wooden tops come loose on metal frames?
Screws driven straight into the wood loosen as it dries and shrinks. Specify bolts into inserts and slotted holes so the wood can move.
